Who can join, how much goes in from 1 April 2026, and what the government adds.
Who can join
New Zealand citizens and people entitled to live here indefinitely (residents) who live in New Zealand. You cannot join on a work, student or visitor visa; you can once you are a resident.
How much goes in
- You: 3.5% of your pay by default since 1 April 2026, rising to 4% on 1 April 2028. You can choose a higher rate, or ask for a temporary reduction to 3%.
- Your employer: at least 3.5% on top, rising to 4% in 2028.
- The government: 25 cents for every dollar you put in, up to $260.72 a year. It is not paid if your income is over $180,000.
