Getting an IRD number
Your tax number. You need it for work, a bank account and KiwiSaver. Applying is free and takes about two days.
How to apply
Create a myIR account on the Inland Revenue website and apply online as a new arrival. Inland Revenue checks your identity with Immigration NZ, so you do not post any documents. Apply before the "final arrival date" on your visa; after that date you apply as someone living in New Zealand.
What you need
- Your passport details.
- Your Immigration NZ application number.
- On a work or student visa, your most recent overseas tax number if you have one (for example your Turkish tax number).
- You do not need a New Zealand bank account for this route. You do if you apply from overseas before you arrive.
Cost and time
It is free. If approved, the number arrives by text or email within about two days. Nobody needs to charge you to apply.
If you start work without one
Give your employer a tax code declaration (form IR330) with your IRD number. Without it, your employer must deduct tax at the non-declaration rate of 45%.
