Driving on a Turkish licence
How long you can drive on it, and why converting takes a theory and a practical test. The time limit drops to 12 months on 1 November 2026.
How long you can drive on it
- Until 31 October 2026: up to 18 months from your most recent arrival.
- From 1 November 2026: up to 12 months. If you have started converting but not finished, you may keep driving up to 18 months.
- Leaving New Zealand and coming back starts the time again. Carry your licence, and its translation, whenever you drive.
Converting needs two tests
Türkiye is not on NZTA's list of exempt countries, so to convert you must pass a theory test and a practical driving test. After the theory test you receive a New Zealand licence with a supervisor condition. It replaces your Turkish licence for driving here, so until you pass the practical test you may only drive with a supervisor beside you. Plan both tests close together.
Translation
A licence not in English needs an original translation from an embassy or consulate, from the authority that issued the licence, or from an NZTA-approved translator.
Fees (July 2026)
For a car licence: application $52.10, theory test $45.70, practical test $59.90. Check NZTA for current fees.
