Opening a bank account
What banks usually ask for, and why opening one early helps with everything else.
What banks ask for
- Proof of identity: your passport and visa.
- A residential address in New Zealand. Ask the bank what proof of address it accepts in your first weeks; a letter from your employer or landlord often works.
- Your IRD number, or that you have applied for one.
Opening before you arrive
Some banks let you start an account from overseas, depending on your visa and arrival date, and activate it at a branch once you are here. This lets your employer pay you from your first week.
Sending money to and from Türkiye
Compare the exchange rate and fees of your bank and of licensed money transfer services before sending larger amounts. Only use services registered on the Financial Service Providers Register.
